You can fulfill multiple roles, but you have a finite amount of time and energy, and a baby will absolutely change the dynamic, not just in the relationship with your son and grandchild but also in your friendships. Honestly, people do often feel abandoned after their loved ones have babies. It is inevitable that the new parents just don’t have enough time, energy, and brain power to maintain all of their relationships in the same way. That’s not necessarily anyone’s fault, but it’s also naive to act like a baby wouldn’t massively and irrevocably change your life and impact your other important relationships. Don’t go into this thinking you can toss a baby into the mix and everything will stay the same except that your financial future is different.

You were both unclear. You could've asked a more direct question, “When will you be home?”. He could've answered your question better. No one that gets asked, 'Where is that?' should be saying, 'At their houses'. He knew what he was doing when he answered you. He was answering you like he was annoyed and didn't want to talk.
