Part of this is just an adjustment to living with another person. Remember, you don't need to constantly be engaged with each other, talking and entertaining each other. You can read your book in the bath, play a videogame, tune out on your phone, sleep in, start a craft, go for a walk alone, whatever it is you are into. If you lived in that apartment alone, like you want, what would you be doing? The only difference between living alone and living with him is having another couple square feet occupied and the occasional kind words. He isn't pestering you or demanding of you. Just ignore his presence for a few hours. He isn't preventing you from relaxing, you are preventing yourself.
If you can't learn to accept another person in your presence, you might never be satisfied living with him. Having an extra bedroom won't make a huge difference as he doesn't want to hang out in there all weekend either. This is something you need to work on. Through exposure, it will likely get better.
