Well maybe he wants kids but not with you. I think you’re wasting your time. At your guys ages, it’s more like people get engaged at 8 mos not 8 years. I dunno. You’re not going to lose all that weight in a year. How long do you want to spin your wheels trying to make this “rocky” relationship (your words) work?
Personally, I (44F) would not be okay at that size. I’d barely be okay at the UK 10-12. But I really don’t think that’s the true issue.

Thank you for your insight. I can't also help but think that he is slowly revealing his ideas. He has told me this is not the case and that he's always been open, but who knows. Nowadays he is as he is and he's unable to be curious about other people's opinions, just quick to label them wrong.
