Go see a therapist: there’s something else going on here that isn’t being acknowledged, I don’t know what that’s up for you to figure out. Yeah, it seems like you’re having an inordinate amount of difficulty letting this go even though you want to, it’s triggering something else in you: a different fear, and you need help putting that down, because yes, it was just a stupid comment from a person.
Also: his excuse is so stupid. He knew it wasn’t funny (like, what was the joke? Can he explain what was funny besides you being really off all day? If he thinks that’s funny he’s a psychopath) he knew this would get under your skin and he upset you on purpose. Did his crying make you feel awkward? I think it was more manipulation. Humans are bad at spotting manipulation but we get feelings that are pretty accurate.
Let your wife know you think this guy is a bad guy and take precautions to limit exposure to him. But still go to therapy, you should be able to have a day in what bothers you, and a way to process even when it does. Good luck!
I don’t mean to be insensitive, but can’t she call an ambulance? Leave an overnight bag ready next to the front door? Alert the neighbor that she’s going to the hospital without them being liable? 1. I’d be too nervous to drive and 2. Most importantly, what if we get into an accident bc I was too nervous?
Just bc the husband doesn’t want to be a responsible father doesn’t mean OP should hand part of the responsibility to a non-family member.
