I was talking about catastrophic damage that could cost more than the house – that, surely, would be covered by insurance. Average tenant wear and tear isn't going to cost more than the house except maybe in the most extreme cases. Unlikely. Especially since the house is in a family-friendly suburb close to a city. Presumably quite desirable.
It's not like he would never paint the place or replace the carpets ever again if he was living there. Repairs and upkeep will need to happen no matter what. Perhaps tenants would accelerate the issue – but perhaps not.
But hey, if renting isn't an option because it's truly not financially beneficial compared to letting the house sit empty or selling it to move (after being with this girl for a year???), then maybe you and OP could tell my landlord she should sell the house I'm living in to me rather than getting $2k a month for it. People show their love in different ways. Personally, I love giving gifts to people. I think it’s fair to put a line about not wanting/expecting any gifts, but it would be crazy to uninvite or kick someone out of the wedding because they wanted to give you a gift.
