2 years and 6 months. That's honestly what I think should be the minimum. The initial “honey moon phase” can last up to 2 years, that's when a relationship transitions and you get a good feel for how the relationship will be going forward. Because that's when the feel good chemicals wane, and the true compatibility test begins. Then you've got 6 months together (minimum) to see if you were together purely for that high, or if there's something more that you two have built.
I will freely admit I didn't do that with my wife, but I got very lucky. If we didn't work out for whatever reason, and I was going to get married again, this would be exactly what I would do. Even though I honestly don't think I would get married again.
