What was he thinking? I would ask him to clarify this. You don’t want to feel like he has lingering feelings for his ex or he feels like he is settling for you. You are worth so much more than being someone’s second best option. And you’re certainly better than being reduced down to “like my ex but better” as a reason for why someone would want to marry you.
I hope it was an honest mistake and he’s just a dumb man. Otherwise I’d seriously consider leaving this relationship if he still views you like that after clarifying.

I don’t understand this need to be contrarian in the face of evidence.
Bad therapists absolutely exist and I would lean in that direction in this case, but I’ve also seen people willfully misunderstand or exaggerate what their therapist was saying. Telling someone to drop their therapist without understanding exactly why and to what extent the therapist is giving this advice is unhelpful and potentially damaging.
