As I can kind of see my relationship to gifts in your husband, I would guess he’s either dealing with some low-grade depression or has some unresolved trauma around gifts. But, of course, that’s just an uninformed opinion.
Or, if he doesn’t appreciate getting gifts but that’s how you like to show love, then be explicit in telling him that. Then at least align gifts with practical things (really nice wool socks, etc). I know you felt that’s what the knives were but that might have been a thing he really would have rather spent the hours of research on.
Maybe some experience gifts would be better. Instead of a watch or knives… a couples cooking class or send him to a knife skills class. Or line up a wine or beer-tasting dinner.
I mean it sounds like she'll dump you once things get going more with the new girl and she has you to fall back on if it doesn't work out.
If you like your boyfriend, keep dating him. If you’re still together in a couple years and are thinking of moving in together and sharing expenses, then start pushing him to get serious about a career path (with or without college). But at this point, take it one day at a time.
