Everyone has their own strategy and no strategy is a one size fits all. With my wife we both put all of our paycheck into our one shared account. There's no splitting up for personal expenses or feeling like you can't buy something of reasonable cost without discussing with each other. We also know that if we do have a bigger purchase that we talk about it first. It helps that we both are financially very frugal so this works for us even though one of us makes 50% more than rhe other, there's no feeling of one person has more financial authority over the other. I would expect I'd have to do the separate accounts if I married someone that was a little looser with their money, but this works for us.
The added feature of our system is we both 100% have the feeling that we share everything. My money is hers and vice versa. We both had cars coming into the relationship as well, now we consider them both “our cars,” not my car and your car. The shared ownership of literally everything we have solidifies the trust and love in each other beyond financial happiness.
As much as it sucks, your reputation DOES proceed you. You can either embrace the person you were, bad shit and all, or be shamed by it.
TBH your BF is a prick for doing that to you. He should have shut that shit down ASAP. Be thankful you know that your BF will intentionally subject you to emotional distress so he can ride in and save the day.
He can say that all he wants, but he still says you are the more emotional one while he conveniently forgets anger is an emotion, which is misogyny 101. It's already affecting your relationship, it isn't theoretical. He's spiraling and you can't logic him out of a stance he emotion-ed his way into. This will only get worse, because he's angry that he's unemployed which he self-medicates with drinking, and then uses the alt-right to solidify his belief that all of his failings aren't his fault. You can't save him, all you can do is choose whether or not you are willing to get dragged down with him.
