It needn’t be “major” surgery. I was sterilised via keyhole surgery. I was in and out within about 12 hours. My recovery was affected somewhat when a wound became infected but typical recovery is straightforward.
My perspective on the situation was that I knew I didn’t want to have more children and wanted to permanently prevent that, and sterilisation was an appealing solution.
