He might not need a super complicated routine to get reasonably nice curls. I've tried every miracle curl routine in the book, and my hair still looks best when I just flip it upside down while it's soaking wet, rake a bunch of gel in, then scrunch until most of the water is squished out. Flip right side up and leave it tf alone until it's dry. As long as he uses conditioner and makes sure it's not plastered to the back of his head when he adds gel, it should look fine.
