This is also why couple's counseling didn't work. Group counseling with abuser is not a good thing. Group counseling requires that participants be in good faith (even if they're not perfect). Anything else and it will do harm.
OP, keep journaling. It's how you see the progression. It's intended to be slow. If they show you who they are up front, you wouldn't stay. After my first spouse became abusive over time like this, I learned to at least microjournal. It helped me not only see bad patterns in other people, but also in myself as well as the good.
