You can help people without putting your life at risk? You can literally volunteer and do charity work that helps people of any and all type of vulnerable situation. You are lucky that you haven't been beaten, raped, stabbed and robbed. Those things are very real and happy. I seriously am stopping myself short here on going off about this and making you feel worse.
Has he already verbally committed to his family? Is there any danger they could already be firing their employees? Because then he'd really need to hurry up to recant, before his family does anything irreversible with their staff.
Also, I'd want to see a longterm business plan that's realistic – putting all that free labour into something that has no chance of recovery would seriously piss me off. Maybe you can collect data of competing businesses and their business numbers over the last few years, to show that it's a dying industry? Maybe the focus shouldn't be to save the existing company, but to rethink the business and find a new and more profitable area they could develop into?
