I;m piggybacking off another comment but didn't want this to get lost in a thread because I really want to share my experience with you.
Honestly, him regretting the breakup would probably wreck you, OP. An ex of mine died by suicide almost 8 years ago-we dated on and off for 20 years, and our break ups were always amicable- frankly, it almost broke me. I found out later from mutual friends of ours that after the last time we (we had stopped seeing each other and he started dating someone else, who he eventually got pregnant and was going to marry her) he called off the wedding because of me. I dont necessarily have regrets, because I love my current partner very much, and I'm glad life worked out the way it did as far as that goes, but all the “what if”s wondering if somehow, I could have prevented his death have been very nude to deal with. I've finally come to terms with it for the most part, but it has been a very painful, and very difficult road.
OP, from personal experience, I think you should let sleeping dogs lie. I doubt any good can come from reading that letter, and it may cause years, if not decades, of pain and anguish.
You should find someone who loves you and recognizes that’s your birthday is important to you and takes the time to show that. Life is too short

Go to a doctor and get your lady parts checked. Ask about the smell issue. This could be an infection. It could be your laundry not sanitizing your underwear properly.

It's easy to claim things are complicated when they are in fact opposite. The fact it's his ex and not some random person is also a considerable thing. People are wary of exes, at times, with good reason. While you want to make another go of it, do be mindful that the way he's rationalized this isn't exactly owning that bullshit.
