There’s 2 levels in it, the junior photographer assistant & the more senior one- who the photographer trusts to take over frol them. This the only way to move up the ladder, network, gain skills in photography, and see how a business is run. If he’s not doing this, then his chances of making it as photographer are slim to none.
Move on. He’s not remotely being realistic. No matter what he needs a paid job- either in photography or something else while building is own photography on the side.
