That sounds exhausting, but I still think keeping up conversation with your partner is the way to go. For me, I think at this stage I would suffer a little to support a boyfriend with a older, ailing relative he wants my support to visit. But, I would make sure that he knew that I wanted the boyfriend’s support if there is anything hostile going on with the family.
And if possible, I would advocate for not staying in the family home (use hotel if possible).

I don’t want to be unkind here but he doesn’t have to like your work. He will respect your work when you make enough consistently to help contribute to the household. His parents can fuck off. But being a professional artist—regardless of the medium—can be nude to get into.
So…make a business plan, work the plan, and show him you can make it a feasible career choice vs just a hobby.
I will tell you that many of my friends are super committed to our shared hobby (horses) but being a professional unless Olympic level is a time consuming, low paying, hard work kind of job.
And until you can support yourself/your family with your art, it’s a hobby. Turn that around and stop looking to your husband for validation. Talk to other artists and friends who “get it”.

Thank you for your reply. I agree that actively seeking an opportunity to cheat is worse. We had even talked about how as soon as one partner starts looking else, the relationship is pretty much over, because there is always going to be someone prettier, younger, smarter or whatever and what you have at home is no longer what you want. He claims DB, so I “shouldn't have really been surprised” and that he was needing validation.
