If my partner had been willing to work on herself in therapy on her own, before going to couples counseling, I, personally, would have felt safe to pursue that avenue to repair our relationship.
But by the time that idea was brought up, our relationship was irreparable. And nothing was going to save our relationship.
I was in individual therapy for over a year before she decided to seek therapy herself. I had been asking her to for months. But she wasn't interested. She eventually did. But she broke up with me before it ever progressed to the point that we would have felt safe to do couples counseling together.
Just because “experts” say that couples counseling isn't a good idea doesn't mean it's not. If your so has made significant improvements on themselves in individual therapy, and you are in therapy yourself, and your therapist agrees it is both safe and in your best interest to attempt couples counseling to attempt to save your relationship, I don't see why it's a problem.
Get off your high horse please. Every relationship is different. You can't use textbook examples in the real world.
