I personally don't have a problem with going through phones. People in relationships shouldn't be doing stuff on their phones (or in real life) that would upset their partners. This is a lie. There are much worse lies. Tell him you know, ask him why, find out if his friendship is more important than your relationship, or if he could get his friend to apologize. While I don't like the idea of telling someone who they can be friends with, I also would not feel they are a great person if they're willing to be okay with someone being treated poorly (although we only have your word that the friend is at fault).
