If he was raised in a setting where that’s the mentality you can’t fault him entirely for thinking that way, even if it’s wrong. It’s up to you if you want to take the initiative of educating him and changing his mentality towards LGBTQ+ people.
If you truly are interested in this person and see no problems other than this, then it’s worth a shot. Better to have one less homophobic person in the world.
