Trying to put myself in her place: she would much rather go do something fun with you, like visit India, than spend a month back at 'home' with her parents. However, she can't NOT go back home, due to family expectations.

Personally, I'd never ever get rid of a pet no matter how much I loved someone and thought they were my soulmate. A pet is like my child. I could never. Even if I bought a house and had a partner move in I would see it as ours now rather than mine. There's just no way I'd compromise on pets. It's either they accept my pet or they don't. You need to get your mother out of your house or you will loose your family. I am actually surprised your wife hasn't already walked away.
