Absolutely right – and there’s a lot to be said for walking away on one’s own terms and setting conditions for what would have to change for those who let you down to be allowed back in. The first bit of time can feel terrifying but if you can get through it and find a new equilibrium it’s astonishing how little power those people have when you see them again. Walking away is great.
I'm so sorry for your loss, and I'm sorry she treated you so selfishly. I broke up with my ex for something slightly similar about a month ago, but not as extreme (instead of him dying, I had just spoken to my dad for the very first time in my life, and learned some fucked up shit about him and how I was made), and I wasn't ready to talk to anyone because it fucked me up that bad. My ex resented me asking for space to sort things out and told me to “enjoy my break” then wouldn't open any message I sent her after that. I was fucked up enough already but being treated so coldly made it all the more painful.
You weren't out of line asking for time to process what you were going through, and there's no excuse for the way she treated you. Especially to concoct a ridiculous lie like that. Sure, she may not have known but she's already lying to make herself the victim, you can't trust any story she'll come up with. Any apology she could offer would be just as phony as her accusation.
