What’s more important? You’re own mental health, respecting your friends and in-laws lives, or trying to hold onto a relationship with your bigoted dad? I almost disowned my dad cause his absolutely love and support for trump. It was more complicated than that, but basically. My brother is gay and I have many friends in the community. I had to sit him down and tell him what was up and let him know I would be out if he didn’t get his shit together. Luckily it turned out ok, but I was totally willing to make that decision if it went a different way. We have to stand up for what is right, even if it means losing people. We can’t control what people do or say but we can absolutely control how we respond to it.
Because people try not to hurt you!
