you're abusing your dog. He's likely hitting your dog. Why are you allowing this?
If you don't dump this guy, at least make sure the kids learn how to be with the dog. If you just stop the dog from growling aka warning the kids, eventually it will likely bite. The dog has every right to inform it's not comfortable with the situation and the kids need to give it space.
