Seems like your boyfriend has already demonstrated he's conflict-avoidant with his friends, so really it's just a continuation of the same conflict-avoidance style.
You can't abdicate responsibility for your own behaviour by saying he should have checked you though. Your own behavour is your own responsibility.
So many problems would be solved if people set their boundaries early and communicated. For instance talking about issues with the flatmates at the time it occurs – then no one gets to the stage where they finally blow after putting up unreasonable behaviour for months.
