The initial stages of therapy are about validation. The therapist is listening to and validating his feelings. That’s rapport and trust building. It opens the field of enquiry.
The therapist is not a threat. The threat is you trying to undermine what he’s trying to do by going to a therapist. You need to chill out and support him.
If you have any real (not just for reddit) desire to save your relationship. You need to encourage him to lean in to his therapy and let him safety share with you or even teach you about what he’s learning.
Praise him when he applies the tools he’s learned. Don’t try to find out what he’s discussing. It’s distrustful and it will only hurt your relationship.
On a slightly different note, when men escalate in the way you explained, it’s often defence mechanism. It’s a learned behaviour that he’s discovered to be able to control conflict. Men are not as good at arguing as women are. You’ve have better memory recall. You’re better at influencing our emotions.
A very quick way to prevent him from pulling that stuff is just to suggest a few rules like:
if things get to heated either partner can call a time out and that time out means both people will stop arguing and chill out for at least 30 mins.
no argument can end with asking either party to move out. That can only happen 24 hours after the argument has ended.
no one will bring up things from the past that are not directly related to the situation or issue
no one will raise their voice or talk over the other person. Each person will talk until they are finished expressing themselves and then they’ll offer the opportunity to respond.
You could set simple rules that would prevent a lot of things from escalating. You might be surprised how easily he would agree to this.
He’s the one cheating and acting paranoid because of it.
