A person is not less of a man because they can't afford things. The two of you should have an honest conversation about what he can afford and what he can't; the conversation you tried to have was not that. You approached him angry and accusatory because he accepted help with his bill. You should have a calm and supportive conversation about the sort of things you and he can afford to do together, and who should foot the bill for what.
If he is financially irresponsible and you don't see a future with him, then break up with him. If it is a deal-breaker for you that he can't buy you gifts or take you out, then break up with him. Shaming him for his financially situation is gross behavior and not okay.
