Yeah ok that makes more sense. I guess if you don't believe in it, you look more at the history of when Christianity appeared in the world vs marriage rituations appearing etc. At least that was my initial viewpoint.
For some reason my brain just didn't compute them thinking Adam and Eve existed first, and therefore that was marriage 1.
Still, legal marriage is just a union of people saying they are committed to each other and don't intend to separate in life going on (despite divorce now being a highly done thing). It's saying they will continue to care for them through health and other issues, be faithful to them and now be legally bound for things like separation. That doesn't have to be religious.
You're just celebrating to people sharing their commitment to each other at a party, and signing a bunch of legal documents to say if one breaks up or passes away, the other might be entitled to some of their stuff.

Any person willing to cross the line to hold a gun to someone’s head will absolutely pull the trigger. He’s had no consequences for this giant transgression. There’s nothing to stop him from doing it again and the escalation from holding it to your head is just a small finger movement.

Check his wallet and pockets when he’s asleep after one of these benders. Are there dollar bills rolled up in a weird way? Is there any white residue on his ID or other cards in it?
It could be perfectly innocent or not. He should know that there is too much scope for it to look suss and only go there with you. He has left himself open to this suspicion and ridicule, and in doing so has risked the harmony of his family life.
