It doesn't have to be an apples to apples comparison, it just has to get the point across that preferential treatment sucks. If your partner has shown preferential treatment to a past partner and refuses to show you the same, it's always going to suck. Obviously your specific example involves some level of pain for you, so there is that. But it shows that you were willing to put up with it for someone else, just not him.
You are not a therapist. And even if you were, its perfectly fine not to know what to say. Most people in these situations always feel as if they need to say something that will fix a bunch of problems or at least alleviate some stress. Most in most of these situations, there is nothing you can say that will fix anything.
