The way OP worded the request is what made it weird. If he had said he wanted to get to know her better, could he take her out for a coffee sometime, then she would have been able to answer yes or no, to let him know if she did or didn’t want to deepen their casual acquaintance.
She broke promises to you first, negating her entitlement to your promise being kept.

I acted normal because every time I asked him what was wrong he got pissed off at me. All the while being really mean and standoffish. I just finished cooking dinner, talked to my kid, and listened to music while he slept. I carried on like I normally would if he wasn’t here and let him be alone. Not getting mad about the gummer?
