You could be right. But also you have to remember these are young men who both started out saying “I’m not gay” I’m sure we all realize there is a stigma around the word “gay” and being someone who grew up masculine presenting and was socialized as masculine I grew up around a lot of negative animosity towards the concept of someone being gay. As a kid you internalize that even before you can develop feelings or concept of sexuality or gender. I mean, for me personally, I’ve only recently began to come to terms that I might be bi and trans. Something that I still kind of grapple with because well society says I shouldn’t be like that, that I shouldn’t be me because it is not heteronormative. That “being gay is a bad thing” this is apparent even how we treat gay men still. How we treat STDs and especially HIV.
I think the public needs to really address how it thinks about the word gay. Yes you can wear it as a badge, you can identify with it. Even queer works. But gay, gay has a stigma that is more often hurled as an insult to cis hetero men for acting non-normatively or in anyway feminine.
I could be completely off and even projecting. But these are just my thoughts. I’d rather be thought of as Bi or queer.
